Parts of an Overhead Crane
Bridge
Bridges are the load-bearing components that run the width of the crane system, connecting the runways and holding the hoists and trolleys. They can be single or double beam and can be of an enclosed box style or beam/girder fabrication, depending on your needs and load classifications.
- Crane Girders: Connected to the end trucks, these support the trolley. They are the principal structural elements of the overhead crane system.
- End Trucks: Positioned on both sides of the span, they house the bridge wheel assemblies, allowing the crane to travel along the bay. End trucks have wheels that ride on the rail and can have as many as 8 wheels depending on the crane’s capacity.
- Bridge Beams: Structural components that span the width of the crane system.
Columns/Support Structures
Columns support the crane system if it isn’t part of the building. The height of columns determines headroom and the maximum lift height. Overhead cranes have multiple columns to support the system safely.
- Column Supports: Essential for standalone crane systems, providing necessary height and stability.
- Base Plates: Anchor the columns to the floor for secure support.
Runway
Runways are what the bridge travels along, moving the crane up and down the bays. These can be part of the building or supported by columns.
- Runway Beams: Provide the track for the bridge to move along.
- Runway Rails: Rails on which the end trucks travel.
Trolley
Trolleys support the hoist and move along the crane’s bridge. They can be configured as top-running or bottom-running and can operate within a track system or run on a beam.
- Crane Trolley: Carries the hoist across the span of the bridge along the girder or girders.
- Trolley Hoist: A combination of the hoist and the trolley frame. In dual hoist applications, two hoists can be mounted to a single trolley frame or two independent trolley frames.
- Trolley Wheels: Enable the trolley to move along the bridge.
Hoist
Hoists create the lift in lifting systems by holding, raising, or lowering the load using wire rope or chains. They can be hand-powered, electrically powered, or pneumatic.
- Crane Hoist: Lifts and lowers the load, fixed to the trolley frame. Options include wire rope hoists, electric chain hoists, pneumatic hoists, and manual chain hoists.
- Hoist Drums: Manufacture drums up to 48 inches in diameter and 26 feet in length, can be flame-hardened and stress-relieved for superior performance.
- Load Chain: Essential for chain hoists, available in various sizes and capacities.
- Wire Rope: Used in wire rope hoists for lifting operations.
Hook
Hooks support the load and connect the hoist to the end effector. Latch kits often need replacing.
- Hook Blocks: Also known as bottom blocks, these come in various sizes and configurations, containing safety latches and meeting rated lifting capacity.
- Hook Assemblies: Available in various sizes, designed to support different load capacities.
- Latch Kits: Essential for securing loads.
Electrification
Electrification systems include festooning systems (cables), insulated conductor bars, and power boxes to bring power from the building to the lifting system.
- Festoon Systems: Cable management systems for electrification.
- Conductor Bars: Provide power to the crane system.
- Power Boxes: Distribute electrical power.
Controls
Controls can be mounted, battery-powered remotes, or hanging pendant varieties. They operate the drive and hoist motors for precise load positioning.
- Mounted Controls: Fixed control stations.
- Remote Controls: Wireless operation for safety and convenience.
- Pendant Controls: Hanging controls for easy access.
Bumpers
Bumpers reduce crane impact and energy, bringing the crane to a controlled rest and stop by minimizing force at the end of travel. Also known as crane stops.
- Crane Bumpers: Absorb impact to prevent damage.
- End Stops: Ensure safe stopping at the end of the runway.
Additional Crane Parts and Accessories
- Bearings: Anti-friction roller bearings for gearboxes, motors, wheel assemblies, and bottom blocks.
- Brakes: Friction brake parts, including disk, shoe, and load brake parts and assemblies.
- Crane Wheels: Induction-hardened wheels for durability, with options for crane duty applications.
- Gearboxes: OEM replacement gearboxes for various brands, designed for durability and performance.
- Motors: Crane-duty motors for all crane motions, including custom-engineered solutions.
- Drive Shafts: Precision-manufactured shafts for motor and crane drive trains.
- Control Panels: For managing crane operations and ensuring safe control.
- Rope Guides and Sheaves: For guiding and supporting wire ropes.
- Limit Switches: For controlling the movement limits of cranes and hoists.
- Electrical Components: Including contactors, motor starters, and relays.
- Load Cells: For measuring load weights and ensuring safe lifting operations.
- Pulleys and Sheaves: For supporting and directing wire ropes or chains.
- Brake Assemblies: Complete assemblies for ensuring safe stopping of cranes.
